Watchmen History

The Waters Watchmen was founded in 1977 by Captain Anthony Scattino, a former fisherman who decided to take a stand against corruption and excesses in the Cape Hazard fishing industry. After working only a few years on a commercial fishing boat, Captain Scattino decided to take a stand against the environmental abuses that the industry was inflicting on the Cape Hazard Bay’s marine ecosystem. Through his tireless fundraising efforts, Captain Scattino was able to purchase the S.S. Waverider, and he officially founded the Waters Watchmen Conservation Society later that year.

Since then, the WWCS has spent its time and funds in pursuit of a more carefully protected and preserved Cape Hazard Bay. In 1982, the WWCS took on Maraccino Fishing Industries when evidence was uncovered about the company dumping hazardous refuse in the bay. After a heated public battle ending in a multi–million dollar settlement, the WWCS ensured that companies engaging in environmental pollution would no longer be tolerated in the Cape Hazard Bay.

Now the WWCS’s attention is focused on fighting abuses in the fishing industry. Especially in the past decade, the population of sardines has been dropping at an alarming rate. “Operation Okinawa”, the WWCS’s newest campaign, is focused on eliminating the sardine over fishing that has wreaked havoc on the Cape Hazard Bay ecosystem.
